How to Set up a Home Surveillance System

If you want the security of Fort Knox, you will have to pay for a high priced security system, but you can make your own surveillance system for much less money.  To make a simple security system, you will need to buy an IP video camera that can be mounted to a wall.  It is possible to find several versions on eBay and Craigslist for less money, but pay attention to the specifications since not all IP cameras are equal.  You do not need the greatest resolution, but it is easiest if the camera comes with software to view the camera feed.

Once you have the camera, set it up in a place that it won’t be easily disturbed or noticed, preferably on a wall or in a corner.  If it is outside, be sure to be using an outdoor model or else it will get ruined in the rain.  You will need to connect the IP camera to the internet and then follow the instructions to set up the password to view the camera feed.  Depending on the model, you can run an Ethernet cable from your router to the camera or use a wireless version.  Once the software has been set up, you will be able to remotely view the camera feed from anywhere in the world by logging into a secure website.

Other cameras can be connected directly to a computer using a USB interface instead of ethernet and this bypasses and security issues associated with using the internet.  This also prevents the video feed from being viewed remotely, but can serve as a good closed circuit security system.  This type of system will need a dedicated server or computer that will be able to record large amounts of video continuously.  You will usually need at least 1TB of storage in order to save a couple days of video, which will provide the most amount of security for your family.
